Gasoline prices deal blow to Memorial Day travelers
Friday, May 16, 2008
News OK -- Fewer Oklahomans and travelers across the nation are expected to travel 50 miles or more during the coming Memorial Day holiday, AAA Oklahoma announced Thursday.

The organization expects that 4,000 fewer state residents will make journeys of at least that length during the holiday, down from 525,000 a year ago.

Nationally, the number is expected to be down nearly 360,000, from the 38.23 million traveling a year ago.

Higher fuel prices are to blame.

We stayed at home. Cleaned out the shed. Drove 4 miles to fill up both vehicles getting ready for work this week.

There are lots of vehicles on the roads and they could care less about the cost of fuel.

This is less than a 1% change. From talking around the office and seeing the increase in bus ridership, I would have expected more to join the "holiday at home" crowd.

I am staying home, but I almost always stay home on Memorial weekend. The roads are a mess with all the trailers/boats, etc. I'll travel next weekend, when there aren't so many people on the road.

If you do the math, less than 1% of the people suveyed are going to change how they drive this weekend. But the survey probably has a margin of error of at least 1%. Therefore, statistically there is no change in driving.

4000 out of 525,000 is less than 1%. How can they estimate that well and why is this small estimated change worthy of a news story?
