Californians cutting spending to afford gasoline
Friday, July 18, 2008
Central Valley Business Times -- High gasoline prices are seen as an increasingly serious problem in California and have caused two in three Californians (68 percent) to cut back on their spending in other areas, according to a new poll by the Field Research Corp.

Many motorists are employing a variety of gas saving measures, such as driving less (78 percent), buying lower grades of gasoline (67 percent), and using their more fuel efficient vehicle (59 percent). Smaller proportions also say they are carpooling more (28 percent), employees are taking jobs closer to their home or moving closer to their worksite (28 percent) or adjusting work hours so they are not commuting to the worksite as often (25 percent).

"The segments of voters who are the most likely to report having cut back in other areas of spending are lower income voters, Latinos, African-Americans, voters living in inland counties, and women."

So rich white men with beachfront property aren't as affected - DAH ! !

Californians love their cars. When we lived there the freeways became the world's largest parking lots at 4 pm on Friday.

My last long haul across a few states, the traffic has been way down compared to the same time last year. I would say people are spending less on gasoline.

Duh, and I'm hearing a lot of elder's stories pouring out how bad they had it during the depression with no cars, they were for the elite. I'm mentally recording all this history while they're here!

We all have a lot that we can do without and use the savings to pay for gas. Even running out for lunch wastes gas. If you brought your lunch every day, you'd save a lot.

Those of us who remember the days of odd/even rationing in 1973 are doing self-imposed conservation methods. I don't want to go back there again.

I don't give a hoot about California. They want to complain about gas prices, but refuse offshore drilling... let them pay the high prices.

Everybody is cutting back. But I still see people driving fast and using AC. I never use the AC. The windows down is all I have for air.
