Battle grows over extending tax breaks for wind energy producers

Fox News -- Federal lawmakers warn that states stand to lose wind industry jobs if Congress fails to pass legislation to extend the federal tax break for wind energy producers, known as the production tax credit, which is due to expire at the end of this year.

"We're just not doing our job,' Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., said. "We need to get after it."

Bennet and fellow Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall are both concerned that their state alone could lose 6,000 jobs. And according to the American Wind Energy Association, as many as 37,000 manufacturing jobs could be at risk nationwide.

The producer credit helps offset the cost of electricity production during a wind farm's first 10 years. It came about in 1992 when the industry was still finding its legs. It's also something that must be renewed

Wind will work when we set up a real energy grid. And it won't need subsidies. And get the Chinese turbines out of here.

Seems to me that when our Oracles of Energy in Washington decide to spend our money on yet another renewable energy project they should assign a timeline or an exit strategy as to when the free (our money) money will end and the company must then prove profitable. Then our all knowing Senate Sub Committees can haggle on what that time of free ride should be.

Got to love this quote from this idiot. Sound like most all of the politicians in D.C. We need to throw out the whole stinking bunch and start over. Come on November!

As much as I dislike tax breaks or some other type of subsidies, I find the tax breaks/benefits extended towards the oil industry even more distasteful and disturbing! The oil industry is dealing in a finite energy supply; if any industry is going to get subsidies, it would be more beneficial for the renewable energy to be receiving any benefits.
However, the taxpayer is the one deserving/needing the break, they have been carrying the parasitic oil industry for far too long.
Its time for non-renewable resource industry to be investing into the renewable energy not the taxpayer!

I like wind farms. It is a way to produce electricity practically pollution free. But I line 20 year old subsidies even less. After 20 years it is time for the wind turbine industry to find a way to be affordable or time to try something else.

Wind farming large startup costs reasonable maintenance and profit due to no fuel costs all you need is for the wind to blow.

Wind “energy” is a fraud and delusion, at least in the eastern states. Wind produces small amounts of unreliable, low quality electricity. Wind turbines must have continuous backup from base-load generation (coal, nuke, etc), which can take over when the wind changes. Wind farms are really tax farms, sowing the fertile ground of government subsidy and tax preference to harvest windfall (literally) profits at the expense of taxpayers and consumers of electricity. The jobs benefit is also vastly overstated. Wind (tax) farms create some jobs during construction but only a few maintenance jobs in the longer term. The production tax credit should NOT be extended.

If the only way jobs can be created is through expensive tax breaks for companies that mostly fail, then I vote no. Government has no legitimate reason to be financially supporting (keeping alive) businesses that can not go it alone.
