Here's a verse from the Torah, selected at random:
From Sefer Shmot, Parasha Bo (or Exodus 13 if you must..)
Line 16: Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said: "I have sinned against the L_rd your G_d and against you.
..so after this, the locusts are blown away by "an exeedingly strong West wind", and the 8th plague is ended. Too bad Pharoah didn't learn his lesson before then...

From Exodus Chapter 31 verse 17
"It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased from work and rested."
I hope that everyone had a Happy Passover (Pesach).

From Sefer Sh'mot, Parashat Sh'mot (or Exodus Ch. 2, if you must..)
"And Moses was content to dwell with the man; and the gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. And she bore a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said: "I have been a stranger in a strange land".
Has anyone else ever felt this way?

From Sefer Bamidbar, Parashat Behaalosecha (or Numbers Ch. 11, if you must..)
And the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people that lusted. From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journed unto Hazeroth; and they abode at Hazeroth.
This verse happenes after Bnai Israel were sick of manna. They then ask for meat, and wind up with more quail than they know what to do with. I'm not sure this verse has meaning this exact day, it's just one I randomly picked by opening up my Hertz Chumash!

From Sefer Bamidbar, Parashat Shalach Lecha (or Numbers Ch. 14, if you must..)
If the L_RD delight in us, then H_ will bring us into the land, and give it unto us-a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not against the L-RD, neither fear ye, the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defense is removed from over them, and the L_RD is with us; fear them not.
This is the story of the spies that go to reconnoiter the land. While they have a good report of the land, all but two are afraid of the inhabitants. Joshua and Caleb try to encourage the people, and come back with a totally good report. For this, Joshua becomes leader after Moses, and Caleb is allowed to live to settle the promised land. The moral of the story appears to be: If you ever travel to Eretz Yisrael, come back with a good report!!

From Parashat Metzora, Sefer VaYikra (or Leviticus ch 14, if you must..)
And the Lord spoke unto Moses saying: This shall be the law of hte leper in the day of his cleansing: he shall be brought unto the priest. And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look and, behold, if hte plague of leprosy be healed in the leper; then shal the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two living clean birds, and cedar-wood and scarlet, and hyssop.
Per Rabbi Hertz, the Rambam's comment is that he had no idea why cedar, scarlet thread and hyssop were used. I just happened to turn to this verse first. Not sure it is relevant to the day or time of year! I hope everyone enjoys their Festival of bringing in the first fruits!!

Today is the 1st of Sivan, Rosh Chodesh, and Day 45 of the Omer --On this day (2105 BCE) Flood waters recede. 150 days after the rains stopped falling in the Great Flood, the raging waters which covered the face of the earth calmed and began to subside at the rate of one cubit every four days (Genesis 8:3; Rashi, ibid. See "Today in Jewish History" for Cheshvan 17.)
Tiferet of Malchut: Compassion in Nobility
A good leader is a compassionate one. Is my compassion compromised because of my authority? Do I realize that an integral part of dignity is compassion? Tiferet -- harmony -- is critical for successful leadership. Do I manage a smooth-running operation? Am I organized? Do I give clear instructions to my subordinates? Do I have difficulty delegating power? Do we have frequent staff meetings to coordinate our goals and efforts?
Exercise for the day: Review an area where you wield authority and see if you can polish it up and increase its effectiveness by curtailing excesses and consolidating forces.

"It is a tree of life for those who grasp it.. and all it's paths are peace.." (I suppose this is why the Conservative Movement's new Chumash is titled "Etz Hyyim")
I understand that D'varim can mean either "things" or "words".. and so much more so is appropriate for the final discourse of Moses.
BTW - Today is the 8th day of the counting of the Omer.. as it is written.. bring an Omer of grain every day....
Only 25 more days to Lag B'Omer and 42 days to Shavuot!!!

Thanks AC-302. Actually, I speak fluent Hebrew. D'varim, literally translates to "things" believe it or not. I was just more interested as to how the english (greek, whatever) names of the books came to be, as they never made any sense to me, except for Genesis. But anyway, whatever they are called they are still our Torah, our Tree of Life. A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet!

Niskymom - I think "Numbers" refers to the censuses taken. The Hebrew name for this book is "Bamidbar" which means "In the Wilderness", and is the fifth word of the sefer and parasha.
So the books would be:
Hebrew Meaning Greek Bereshith In the beginning Genesis (creation) S'moth Names Exodus (migration) VaYikra He called Leviticus (??) BaMidbar In the wilderness Numbers (census) Devarim Words (or speech) Deuteronomy (??)
Devarim is the final discourse of Moshe Rabbinu before the Israelites cross over to occupy their new home. Of course, since he can't cross over and is to die, this is his last chance to get the people to listen and hear what Ha Kad*sh Baruch Hu had to teach them.

TO AC - 302. Thanks for the answers, but of course, being a good Jew I have more questions. Don't the Hebrew Names of the Books also have one-word synopsis meanings to them. Like Breishit (genesis) etc.. I also know that the weekly parasha is the first word or main word of the parasha. Lech Licha, is one of my favorites, but I still don't get how "numbers" for instance, sums up that book, for instance...shmot' (v'eilu shmot....) Do you happen to know what Deuteronomy means????? I like the Hebrew Names, personally, but I guess I must be slightly biased (LOL). Chag Sameach!

In the spirit of Passover - From Sefer Shemoth, Parasha Shmoth (or Exodus Ch. 3, if you must..)
And Moses said: "I will turn aside now, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt." And when the L*RD saw that he had turned aside to see G*D called unto him out of the midst of the bush and said "Moses, Moses". And he said "Here I am." And HE said: "Draw not nigh hither; put off thy shoes from my feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground." Moreoer HE said: I am the G*D of thy father, the G*D of Abraham, the G*D of Isaac adn the G*D of Jacob". And Moses hid his face: for he was afraid to look upon G*D. And the L*RD said: " I have surely seen the affliction of MY people that are in Egypt, and have have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters: for I know thier pains;

Niskymom - that's a good question, and not so far off topic. The accepted English names of the Bible books actually come from the Greek translation. The words are intended to be a sort of one word synopsis of the main theme. The Hebrew names for the books (and for that matter, the weekly Parashat) come from the first word, or first important word of that book. Example: the first word of the Torah is "Bereshith" (In the beginning), which is what we call this first book and the first parashat in Hebrew. The third parasha of the Torah is "Lech Lecha", which comes from:
Parashat Lech Lecha, Sefer Bereshith (or Genesis, Ch. 12, if you must..)
(Transliteration: Vayomer Ad*nai el Avram LECH LECHA maertzah umemoladtcha umebayt avcha el haaretz asher aracha.)
English: Now the L*rd said to Abram: "Get the out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee.
How about that? We steered it back onto topic!! And I got to type in a verse that I find meaningful!! Thanks for the opportunity!!

I know it's not exactly "on topic" but how did the names from the Tanach get translated? How does "Ba-Midbar" which literally translates to "In the Desert" become Numbers. Or how does "Vayikra" become Deuteronomy? And "vos far a Nomen" is Deuteronomy anyway?????

From Sefer Bamidbar, Parahsat Naso (or Numbers Ch. 7, if you must..)
On the sixth day Eliasaph the son of Deuel, prince of the children of Gad: His offering was one silver dish, the weight thereof was ahundred and thirty shekels, one silver basin of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meal-offering; one golden pan of ten shekels, full of incense; one young bullock, one ram, one he-lamb of the first year, for a burnt-offering; one male of the goats for a sin-offering; and for the sacrifice of peace-offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five he-lambs of the first year. This was the offering of Eliasaph the son of Deuel.
(It so happened that this was he first verse I turned to.... One quick note on Naso, these are the descriptions of the offerings of the tribes to dedicate the alter. All of the tribes give the exact same offerings. The order is interesting as Judah goes first, followed by Isaccar, Zebulun, Ruben, Simeon, Gad, Ephraim, Manasseh, Benjamin, Dan, Asher, then Naphtali. It's not the order the sons were born in. But I'd guess we all know why Judah is first.

Haftarah for Tetzaveh
Ezekiel 43:10-27
10 [Now] you, O mortal, describe the Temple to the House of Israel, and let them measure its design. But let them be ashamed of their iniquities: 11 When they are ashamed of all they have done, make known to them the plan of the Temple and its layout, its exits and entrances —— its entire plan, and all the laws and instructions pertaining to its entire plan. Write it down before their eyes, that they may faithfully follow its entire plan and all its laws. 12 Such are the instructions for the Temple on top of the mountain: the entire area of its enclosure shall be most holy. Thus far the instructions for the Temple.
May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace.

From Parashat Bashellach, Sefer Shemoth (or Exodus 15, if you must...)
Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the L_rd, and spoke, saying:
I will sing unto the L-RD for He is highly exalted; The horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea. The L-RD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation; This is my G_D, and I will glorify Him; My father's G_D, and I will exhalt Him AD-NAI is a man of War, The L_RD is his name. Pharaoh's chariots he and his host has he cast into the sea And his chosed captains are sunk in the Red Sea.
Some (I hope all) may recognize this as part of the "Song of the Sea". It's the 4th aliyah and one of only two spots in the Torah where the whole congregation MUST stand during the chanting (the other is the first reading of the 10 Commandments, the following week). If you get this aliyah (I've been so honored once), you can see that the Scroll is written to with spaces between the phrases to look a little like waves on the ocean!! The Song of the Sea is a true "Firebrand" expression of victory over our oppressors. Shabbat Shalom!!

From Parashat VaYerah, Sefer Bereshith (or Gen. Ch. 18, if you must..)
He (Abraham) came forward and said, "Will YOU (Ha Kadosh Baruch Hu) actually wipe out the innocent together with the guilty? Supposed there are fifty innocent people in the city. Would YOU still destroy it, and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty good people inside it? It would be sacrilege even to ascribe such an act to YOU - to kill the innocent with the guilty, leting the rightous and the wicked fare alike. It would be a sacrilege to ascribe this to YOU! Shall the whole world's Judge not act justly?"
As we all know, Abraham eventually bargains him down to 10 good men. Our scholars indeed agree that the H-ly One, Blessed be He, must act towards us with absolute equity. If for no other reason, as a role model for us mere mortals. So when G-D says "l'olam va'ed" to us.. it really means "forever and ever". No execptions..

From Parashat Acharey Moth, Sefer Vayekra (or Leviticus Ch.18, if you must)
"Do not lie with a male as you would a woman, since this is a perversion."
Notice it specifically says "male/male".. it says nothing about a female/female relationship. How do our "fundamentalist", (one simple definition is "literalist"), friends interpret this one?? In our time we now have scientific evidence that people don't "choose" this lifestyle. So what do we do? How about reach out to everyone despite their handicap/affliction/whatever-you-choose to call it? You don't have to like it, but you do have to accept it. Comments?

Remember the sabbath day , to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is a sabbath unto the L-ord thy G-d, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servent, nor thy maid-servent, nor thy cattle, nor thy(sic) stranger that is within thy gates; for in six days the L-rd made heaven and earth, the sea and allthat in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the L-rd blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

From Parashat Vayyera (Sefer Bereshith, or Genesis Ch. 18, if you must..)
And He (the angel)said " I will certianly return unto thee when the season cometh round and lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son". And Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. And Sarah laughed within herself saying: "After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure my lord being old also"? And the Lord said unto Abraham: "Wherefore did Sarah laugh saying; 'Shall I of a surety bear a child, who am old?'"
HMMM.. so the A-mighty tells Abraham a fib!!.. (Sarah basically is saying "HA! I may be old, but my husband is an old man too, he can't do it!") But the angel reports "Why is Sarah laughing saying that she's too old.." Maybe the lesson is that sometimes it's just better not to tell the whole truth if it will hurt someone's feelings, and it's only an interpersonal matter..

Joy2U - Let's see how Rabbi Hertz translated the quote near the bottom from Parasht Bereshith (or Genesis Ch. 3, line 15 - if you must..)
"And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; they shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise their heel."
Joy, et al.. it's not "HE" or "Him".. it's "they" (meaning "mankind", not a deistic reference). There are number of mistranslations of this sort in the Hebrew portion of your "King James" bible. Unfortunately, numerous Protestant religions have formed doctrine on these errors. I've heard that there is a newer translation used by Christians that actually has gone back and corrected many of these errors.

"Rabban Gamaliel, the son of Rabbi Judah the Prince, said 'Excellent is the study of Torah combined with some worldy pursuit, for the effort demanded by them both makes sin to be forgotton. All study of Torah without work must at length be futile and leads to sin.'"
From Pirke Avot, Ch. 2, 2nd Paragraph
I wish our ultra-Orthodox bretheren, especially in Israel, would take this verse to heart. Most of our greatest scholars worked(Judah and Gamaliel were merchants) and some were even wood choppers (a very menial occupation, even in that day..) Better to earn one's keep than be "on the dole" for years. It's a terrible strain on the Israeli economy to support thousands and thousands of mostly mediocre "scholars".

Or speak to the earth, and it will instruct you; let the fish of the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know that the hand of the L-RD has done this?
Job 12: 7-9

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:11 and 12

This is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ. Philippians 1:9 and 10

Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God. John 3:20 and 21

The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.1 Corinthians 2:14

All Israel (and the rightous of all nations) shall have a portion in the world to come, as it is said: "And thy people shall all be rightous;they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified."
(Opening prayer to Pirke Avot, from Talmud SANHEDRIN and Isiah)

24 And G-d said: 'Let the earth bring forth the living creature after its kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after its kind.' And it was so. 25 And G-d made the beast of the earth after its kind, and the cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the ground after its kind; and G-d saw that it was good.

'Come now, let us reason together,' says the L-rd. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.' Isaiah 1:18

For let all the peoples walk each one in the name of its g-d, But we will walk in the name of the L-rd our G-d for ever and ever.
