I didn't mean to imply that there was a cutoff point for defining "old". If (as in this case) the thread is recent, then it's reasonable to expect that other people will post to it anyway (as I'm doing now) -- so there's not much harm in the lack of a timestamp update.
10k is my guess, too. Perhaps you can do a controlled test as you approach that threshold -- you could reach it within a week, btw -- and let us know the answer, assuming that the mods don't respond first.

I noticed that my replies, even in this 1 day old topic, do not register on the forum list. So if there's a new account filter, it must apply to all topics, not just old ones. I wonder how many points I will need before my posts register on the forum list. 10k? that seems to be the magic number for lots of GB features.

my 2nd edit may have been more than 5 minutes. I'm not sure but will try again.
As for anti-bumping of old topics, they were all on page 1 of the forum and had been replied to by others within the past week so maybe the mods should change the parameters to decide when a topic should be protected. Or, perhaps it is a bug as I can't imagine they would consider a 5 day old topic to be "old"
edit 1
edit 2 - I guess I was slow to edit before.

Someone else noticed similar behavior; it seems possible that the mods have made a silent change to the site so that new members posting to old topics will not bring them to the top. This makes some sense -- if it's an active topic, then someone else will post to it soon enough anyway.
My guess: feature, not bug.

ambius,
You're not allowed to use the regular "insert link" feature until you have at least 10,000 points. You are allowed "unlimited" edits within 5 minutes.
1st link
2nd link
3rd link

I'm not sure if you're allowed to make more than one edit.
1st edit: Let me check.
2nd edit: It worked for me.
3rd edit: Are you sure you tried to edit within the 5 minutes?

hmmm links are still messed up after my edit and now my edit button is gone too... but hopefully the forum vets know how to make the links work, that I provided. or better yet, know an answer to my question without even needing the links.
btw, why is my edit link gone after only 1 edit?
