Michael, isn't the reason obvious? they were trying to post a price for SC (Southern California) ;-)
also, keep in mind that their account may have been started in California 5 years ago but they might not live there any more and don't know how to change their registered state (since it is impossible for them to do so, personally). I should be a Detroit member, not Flint, but I'm not going to bother the mods to change something so petty on my account. It is of course also possible that they were on vacation in South Carolina. It would be nice if GB did a reverse lookup on IP addresses, or captured GPS data from mobile apps, to clearly show where the person was when they reported the price instead of what website they were on 5 years ago when they registered an account with GB.

Just when I thought I had seen it all, I just caught a member from the California site posting a wrong price in South Carolina. I just happened to pass the station in question at the same time they posted the fake price. The baffling this is, they've been a member since April 11, 2006, and have a whopping 595 points.
Why? (rhetorical)

I've seen it occasionally...usually a genuine mistake. There have been times I knew it was on purpose and malicious and would post a note on their whiteboard as well as update the correct price.

Most mistakes are of the honest variety. But I have seen instances of malicious price misreporting, and reported them. When a brand new member posts prices that are off by more than $.30/gal. for stations in several states at the same time, you know it's got to be intentional. Some people just like to be disruptive.

Have seen mistakes happen and have caught myself making a few mistakes myself (hit the wrong key, transposed numbers etc.) but I did catch a new user that would randomly pick stations and would take a guess at the prices. It was pretty obvious. I pointed it out to Gas Buddy via the Help/Contact Us tabs and they sent an email warning to the user. That seemed to end it.

What the moderators have asked me to do is when deleting a price posting, list the reason in the comments. If the problem persists, continue listing the reason in the comments when you delete the post and post a message in a "Suggested Posting Correction" topic regarding the post. If you don't have this topic, you could start one.

After correcting or deleting the bad prices, I'd watch, as TDI_LOVER has suggested, to see if the problem reoccurs. If it did, I'd then inquire on the erroneously posting member's Whiteboard, initially giving them a "courtesy" benefit of the doubt.
There are a few possible, more innocent reasons they might be incorrectly posting, such as routinely clicking on the wrong station pin on the map and posting from there, etc.
So, I would post a friendly "heads up" on their Whiteboard "if" I saw an actual reoccurring problem, which would likely "fix" most scenarios.
Eventually, it might come to reporting them to the moderators, though, if they are indeed malefactors.

Thanks for that info. I've seen one person who consistently posts incorrect prices including diesel where no diesel is available at a couple of stations. I'll definitely report the next time I see this.

If it is happening a lot in your area, take note of who is making the incorrect postings. If you are seeing the same person/people making incorrect postings, either wrong prices or posting prices for fuel types that are not sold there, then report them to the moderators. Help --> Contact Us
