I'm thinking best apps in general, pay or free. I curently have a Magellan, though it is an older model, and there have been no map updates for it since 2010. I have a 2011 Ford Fusion with Sync that gives turn by turn, but I prefer to have a visual display to give me a better layout of where I am.

nedusmustafus:
Sorry, but the original post asked for thoughts on the best GPS app, not the cheapest. The Garmin GPS app has been reviewed as being the equivalent of Garmin stand-alone GPSs.
Isn't the purpose of a mobile application to do the job you want done, and if you're asking what's the best, as TheRavenHeart did, all you can do is provide the answer to the question. If, instead, you'er asking what's "almost as good...near the best...", then you'll get a different answer.

$39 for a phone app? Holy cow. For that price, the app should be able to make the iPhone sprout legs, trot to the kitchen, and make me dinner!

Are you looking for free apps or are you willing to pay for the apps? Are you looking for traveling in general, or are you looking for something specific? Some attractions/venues/etc have their own apps that might be useful if you're visiting as a tourist but wouldn't necessarily be good otherwise. Are you looking for apps for gas prices, sightseeing, locations in general (i.e., shopping, etc.), maintenance/record keeping/fuel logs, or something different.
If you're willing to spend the money, some magazine reviews have said that the Garmin GPS app is the best GPS app in it's price range. I believe it's $39 with no monthly or additional charges. Not sure how often the maps are updated and I'm not sure if it provides continual traffic updates. There are better, but considerably more expensive GPS apps available, but the Garmin is supposed to replicate newer Garmin stand-alone GPSs.

I would add AAA , Urbanspoon, and an insurance co. app. We have a Garmin so I don't worry about a GPS one.
